How to register with a doctor in Switzerland — step by step
Whether you're new to Switzerland or looking for a GP for the first time — registering is simpler than you might think. Here's a step-by-step guide from our practice.
Step 1: Get health insurance
Before seeing a doctor, you need basic health insurance (KVG/OKP). This must be arranged within 3 months of arriving in Switzerland. Compare premiums at priminfo.admin.ch.
Step 2: Choose a GP
You can freely choose a GP — or choose a GP model (Hausarztmodell) with your insurer, which lowers premiums. If you choose a GP model, you need to register your chosen doctor with your insurer.
Step 3: Book an appointment
At our practice, you can book directly online — as a new patient through our booking system. First appointments are longer so we can record your medical history.
What to bring
Insurance card, ID, current medication list. If available: recent medical reports, lab results, vaccination record. This makes the initial intake much smoother.
No registration freeze
Many Zurich practices aren't accepting new patients. We are. Book your appointment and we'll take care of the rest.
Next step: Book a consultation to discuss your health in detail.
