Functional Medicine · Dr. Romanos Practice

When standard medicine
reaches its limits.

Structured medical assessment for chronic, complex, or unexplained conditions.

If you've been told "everything is normal" — but you don't feel normal.

Chronic fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, or unexplained symptoms often remain unresolved in standard care. Not because nothing is wrong — but because the underlying mechanisms are not being analysed.

Indication

Is this for you?

  • Persistent fatigue despite normal lab results
  • Digestive issues without clear diagnosis
  • Hormonal symptoms that aren't improving
  • Brain fog, poor concentration, reduced performance
  • Recurring symptoms despite treatment
  • "Everything looks fine" — but you don't feel fine

Process

Structured. Medical. Not alternative.

1
Clinical Deep-Dive

Comprehensive medical history, symptom patterns, previous diagnostics. 60 minute initial consultation.

2
Targeted Diagnostics

Only tests that are clinically meaningful — no screening panels without a hypothesis.

3
Structured Treatment Plan

Clear priorities. No protocols. No supplement overload.

Philosophy

No protocols. No guesswork. No trends.

We do not work with predefined supplement lists or generic testing panels. Every step is based on clinical reasoning, individual presentation, and medical relevance.

What is not useful — we do not do.

Context

Standard Approach vs. Our Approach

Standard Our Practice
Symptom-focused Root-cause analysis
Short consultations In-depth clinical assessment
Routine labs Targeted diagnostics
Trial-and-error Structured plan

Expertise

Medical thinking comes first.

Unlike many functional medicine providers, this approach is grounded in clinical medicine. Clinical reasoning takes priority — not protocols, not trends.

Physician-led

Assessment by a physician — not a coach, not an algorithm.

Conventional + advanced

Integration of standard and extended diagnostics.

Clear prioritisation

Focus on the 1–3 key drivers behind your symptoms.

Measurable outcomes

Objective parameters — not guesswork.

Diagnostics

Targeted analyses — with a clear clinical question.

Extended Blood Diagnostics

Thyroid, iron metabolism, inflammatory markers, micronutrients, omega-3 index. Targeted by clinical hypothesis — not as a panel.

GI-MAP (Gut Analysis)

Stool analysis for gut flora, inflammation, leaky gut, and pathogens. For persistent digestive complaints when standard results offer no explanation.

SIBO Breath Test

Hydrogen and methane breath test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. For bloating that worsens through the day, constipation, or an IBS label given without a causal workup. Performed at a specialised laboratory in Zurich.

DUTCH Test (Hormone Profile)

Cortisol daily pattern, oestrogen metabolites, testosterone, melatonin. For burnout, PMS, menopause, or sleep disorders.

Immunological Assessment

Differentiated immune profile for recurrent infections, chronic inflammation, or autoimmune suspicion.

Organic Acids Test

Organic acids in urine: markers for mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, B-vitamin status and microbial activity. For persistent exhaustion or brain fog with no measurable finding on standard labs.

Expectations

What to expect.

  • Initial consultation: 60 minutes
  • Detailed review of symptoms and prior findings
  • Clear recommendation for diagnostics (if indicated)
  • Structured treatment strategy
  • No unnecessary testing. No vague plans.

Focus Areas

Typical areas we address.

Chronic Fatigue & Burnout

Energy loss, exercise intolerance, persistent exhaustion — systematically assessed.

Gut Health & Digestion

Bloating, intolerances, IBS — treating causes, not symptoms.

Hormonal Imbalance

Cycle, stress, thyroid, menopause — precise analysis, not guesswork.

Metabolic Health

Insulin resistance, weight, lipid metabolism — identifying metabolic drivers.

Skin Conditions

Acne, eczema, chronic inflammation — investigating internal causes.

Performance & Cognitive Function

Brain fog, poor concentration, declining performance — root causes, not workarounds.

Recurrent Infections & Immune Function

Frequent infections, slow recovery, immune dysregulation — systematically assessed.

Post-Viral Syndromes

Persistent symptoms after infection, including long COVID — exercise intolerance and fatigue.

Costs

What basic insurance covers — and what it doesn't.

General-practice assessment is covered by mandatory basic insurance (KVG). The functional workup is a self-pay service: it requires time and a depth of analysis that cannot be delivered responsibly within the consultation time basic insurance provides for.

Covered by basic insurance (KVG)

General-practice consultation, baseline blood work, and investigation where a treatable underlying condition is suspected Covered

Functional workup — self-pay

Functional workup, professional fee Initial consultation, interpretation of all findings, written treatment plan and results consultation. CHF 1'400

Analyses — billed separately

SIBO breath test CHF 250
GI-MAP, comprehensive stool analysis CHF 800
DUTCH, hormone profile CHF 700
Organic Acids Test CHF 700

Usually one of these analyses is indicated, occasionally two — not all of them. What gets ordered is decided together after the initial consultation, and you receive the cost estimate in writing beforehand. Typical total for a functional workup: CHF 1'650 – 2'900.

FAQ

Good to know.

What distinguishes functional medicine from conventional medicine?

Functional medicine does not replace conventional medicine — it complements it where standard approaches reach their limits. We systematically analyse the mechanisms behind your symptoms.

How long does the initial assessment take?

The initial consultation lasts 60 minutes. Lab results are available within 5–10 working days, followed by the results discussion with a written treatment plan.

Are the costs covered?

General-practice assessment is covered by basic insurance (KVG). The functional workup is self-pay: a professional fee of CHF 1'400 covering the initial consultation, interpretation, written treatment plan and results consultation. Analyses are billed separately, CHF 250 to 800 depending on the test.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book an appointment directly online. You are welcome to bring any existing results.

Is functional medicine evidence-based?

Yes. Our diagnostics and treatment are based on current scientific evidence and clinical experience — not blanket protocols.

What if no functional cause is found?

That is valuable information in itself. We will advise you honestly — whether a different investigation is needed or whether conventional treatment should take priority.

Clarity changes everything.

If your symptoms remain unexplained, continuing the same approach will not lead to different results. A structured medical assessment creates direction.
