Family Doctor Insurance Model 2027: Switch, Save, Keep Your GP

The 2027 premiums are out, and many people are now asking whether a family doctor (GP) model is worth it. The real question is almost always the same: can I keep my doctor? How the models work, which deadlines apply, and which insurers let you be a patient with us.

The models at a glance

Basic insurance covers the same services in every model. The only difference is how you access a doctor — and therefore the premium.

Free choice of doctor (standard model): you see any doctor directly. This is the most expensive option.

GP model (Hausarztmodell): you choose a GP from your insurer’s list. Your GP is the first point of contact and refers you to specialists when needed.

HMO model: like the GP model, but tied to a specific group practice or health centre.

Telmed: you call a telephone advice line before every doctor’s visit.

What the GP model means in practice

You see your GP first. If you need a specialist, you get a referral. Emergencies are always exempt, and with many insurers so are visits to a gynaecologist, an ophthalmologist or a paediatrician. The exact exceptions are in your insurer’s policy conditions.

If you go straight to a specialist without a referral, the insurer may refuse to pay. That is the core rule of the model — and the reason for the lower premium.

Medically, the model has a real advantage: one doctor knows your full history, your medication and your results. That prevents duplicate tests and conflicting treatments.

How much can you save?

The discount compared with free choice depends on the insurer, model, place of residence, age and deductible. The federal government’s official premium calculator at priminfo.admin.ch shows whether switching pays off for you: enter your place of residence, year of birth, deductible and accident cover, then compare the models directly.

Deadlines for 2027

If you change insurer, your cancellation of basic insurance must reach your current insurer by 30 November 2026. What counts is the date it arrives, not the postmark. Send it in good time and by registered mail.

If you stay with your insurer and only change model, many insurers allow a little more time. Deadlines differ, though — ask your insurer rather than waiting for the last day.
